Mission statement

The primary mission of the Department of General Practice is to educate general practitioners of dentistry within the scope of areas of the department's responsibility. Within this mission is the definition and provision of quality oral health care to the public and educating dental students to be capable of providing preventive and treatment services in an ethical and professional manner. Implicit in this mission statement is the directive that the department will continue to respond to the existing and future primary dental care needs of the people in the Commonwealth.

Advanced Education in General Dentistry

The 12- or 24-month AEGD residency program provides advanced education and clinical experience to prepare dental school graduates for a career in the practice of comprehensive general dentistry. Clinical training takes place at one of two major clinical sites - VCU Community Memorial Hospital Dental Clinic in South Hill, Virginia or Johnson Health Center Amherst County Community Health Center Dental Clinic in Madison Heights, Virginia.

VCU School of Dentistry's Division of Dental Hygiene is proud to offer the only dental school-based dental hygiene program in the commonwealth of Virginia. In support of our mission, the Division of Dental Hygiene leads the dental hygiene profession in its commitment to students by providing an exemplary comprehensive education in evidence-based knowledge, patient-centered clinical care and public health access to care for all.
